Pop-Ads ads are a way for websites to earn revenue, allowing them to keep their content accessible for free. Most websites and social media platforms show ads to earn revenue. These ads can be related to a product on the website or something you might be interested in.


The issue with pop-up ads is they are intrusive and annoying. On mobile, they can take up the whole screen. This is why most websites and apps have switched to banner ads. But there are still some untrusted or old websites that use pop-up ads.

In the following sections, let us see the methods to block popup ads in Chrome on Android, iOS, and Mac or Windows PC.

Block Pop-Up Ads in Google Chrome on Android

Pop-up ads on Android can get you to press links that can result in Adware being sideloaded on your device, and the next thing you know, you are bombarded with ads. So let’s look at three ways to get rid of pop-up ads in Chrome on Android.

Method 1- Disable Pop-Ups from Chrome Settings

Step 1: Open Chrome on your Android device and tap on three vertical dots in the top right corner.

Step 2: Go to Settings.

Step 3: Scroll down to Advanced and open Site settings.

Step 4: Tap on Pop-ups and redirects.

Step 5: Press the toggle to disable pop-ups.

Turning off pop-ups should block pop-ups from appearing on Chrome.

If you want a specific website to show pop-ups, you can enable them by turning on the toggle.

Method 2- Turn Off Ads and Notifications in Chrome Settings

We also recommend you turn off Ads and Notifications within Chrome settings, which will prevent websites from displaying intrusive ads and ensure that you do not receive any notification that you did not intentionally sign up for.

Step 1: Press the three vertical dots at the top right corner of your Chrome browser.

Step 2: Tap on Settings.

Step 3: Scroll down to Advanced and select Site settings.

Step 4: Go to Notifications.

Step 5: Turn off the toggle to block any website from sending you notifications.

You can add trusted websites to exceptions.

Step 5: Go back, scroll to Ads, and turn off the toggle.

This will block websites from displaying pesky and misleading ads.

Method 3-  Change your DNS Settings

Another way to block those pop-up ads on Chrome is by changing your DNS settings. This will switch your DNS provider to Adhuard, which will also block most of the ads on Google Chrome and other apps. It is a completely free method and does not require any app installation.

Step 1: Open Settings on your Android device.

Step 2: Go to Network and internet and scroll down to Private DNS.

Private DNS might be located under Connection & sharing in MIUI or Connections in Samsung devices. We recommend you just type Private DNS on the search bar in Settings to find it on your device.

Step 3: Under Private DNS Mode, select the option Private DNS provider hostname. 

Step 4: Here, type dns.adguard.com and press Save.

This will switch your DNS provider to Adguard and block most if not all ads on your Android device on Chrome, Firefox, and some other apps.

Block Pop-Up Ads in Google Chrome on iOS

iPhone and iPad users can also block pop-up ads within Chrome by disabling the pop-up and redirects in Chrome settings. That said, the process is slightly different from Android.

Step 1: Open the Google Chrome app and tap on the three horizontal dots in the bottom right corner.

Step 2: A menu will pop up. select Settings.

Step 3: Now open Content Settings and tap on Block Pop-ups.

Step 4: Turn on the switch from Grey to Blue.

This will enable the pop-up blocker and disable pop-ups from appearing on Chrome. You can turn it off if you want to allow pop-ups for a certain website.

Block Pop-Up Ads in Chrome Desktop (Mac, Windows)

Similar to Android, pop-up ads are a nuisance on desktops as well. Especially on untrusted websites flooded with such pop-up ads that can slow down the performance of your PC, causing it to lag and stutter. So let us check how you can block pop-up ads in Google Chrome on Mac or Windows PC.

Method 1- Turn Off Pop-ups and Ads in Chrome Site Settings

Like the Android version, you can block websites from showing pop-ups on the desktop version of Chrome. This will prevent any kind of pop-ups from appearing on the websites, including pop-up ads.

Step 1: Launch Google Chrome on your PC and click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

Step 2: Open Settings.

Step 3: Select the Privacy and Security option from the left sidebar.

Step 4: Click on Site settings.

Step 5: Within Site settings, scroll down and click on Pop-ups and redirects.

Step 6: Here, select Don’t allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects.

Turn Off Pop-ups and Ads in Chrome Site Settings

This will block all pop-ups and pop-up ads.

If there is any website where you do not want to block pop-ups, add it to Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects.

Step 7: Go to Additional content settings.

Step 8: Click on Ads.

Step 9: Now select Block ads on sites that show intrusive or misleading ads.

 Method 2- Download the AdBlock Extension

To block pop-up ads from appearing on Chrome, you can download the AdBlock extension, which will remove all pop-up ads, videos, and banner ads on all websites, including Facebook and YouTube. It will also protect you against trackers and third-party cookies.

Step 1: Download the AdBlock extension from the Chrome Web Store.

That’s it! AdBlock will start blocking ads after installation. You do not have to do anything. AdBlock can certain ads on trusted websites and Youtube channels if you want to support them. This is how you can enable this setting:

Step 2: Click on the extension icon at the top right side of the Chrome toolbar.

Step 3: Select the AdBlock extension.

Step 4: Click on the Gear icon to visit AdBlock settings.

Step 5: Within General settings, select Allow some non-intrusive advertising and Allow ads on specific YouTube channels.

Enabling this will let certain ads pass through the AdBlocker and will support your preferred creators and content providers.

Method 3- Use uBlock Extension to Block Ads

Another extension on this list is uBlock, a popular adblocker with more than half a million users. uBlock can also protect you against crypto mining scripts used on websites that can slow down your PC. You can allow or disable ads on a per-site basis.

Step 1: Download the uBlock Free Adblocker extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Now just visit any website, and it will block all ads.

Step 2: If you want to allow ads on a certain website, click on the extension icon on the top right side of the Chrome toolbar.

Step 3: Click on the uBlock extension.

A small window will open showing the list of blocked ads and trackers on the website.

Step 4: Click on the big power button and reload the page to allow all ads.

The website will show ads and pop-ups. But unlike the Adblock extension, uBlock will not filter non-intrusive ads and will allow all ads to appear on the page.
